When I visited the local apple store they told me that the mic jack that plugs in needs to have three black rings on the part that plugs in, in order for the microphone to work on a mac mini. On the back of the mini there is a port for audio in and a port for audio out. I spent ages going into settings, and sound and trying to configure everything, but that wasn't the problem. So, for the less tech-savvy like myself, I have posted this question and answer.
